ESIC Registration Online – Overview
The Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme, launched by the Government of India, provides medical, financial, and other benefits to employees. It is administered by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
As per the law, ESI registration is mandatory for companies with more than 10 employees (in some states, the limit is 20 employees). For employees earning up to ₹21,000 per month (including basic salary and dearness allowance), the applicable ESI contribution is deducted from their salary.

Key Benefits of ESIC Registration for Employee Welfare and Security
Medical Aid
From the very first day of employment, employees registered under ESI and their families are entitled to full medical care. This includes hospitalization, treatment, and medicines, ensuring both preventive and curative healthcare without additional costs, promoting employee well-being and financial security.
Maternity Aid
Pregnant women covered under ESI receive maternity benefits for up to 26 weeks, extendable by 30 days on medical advice. To qualify, employers must contribute wages for at least 70 days in the preceding two contribution periods, supporting maternal health and financial stability.
Disablement Benefits
In case of employment-related disability, ESI provides financial assistance equal to 90% of the employee’s monthly salary. This benefit continues during the entire period of disablement, ensuring steady income and support for medical needs, rehabilitation, and day-to-day living expenses.
Sickness Benefits
Employees suffering from illness can take medical leave for up to 91 days per year while receiving 70% of their monthly wages. This ensures financial stability during recovery, allowing them to focus on health without worrying about loss of income.
Dependent Benefits
If an employee passes away during the course of employment, the dependents are entitled to receive 90% of the deceased employee’s monthly salary. This ensures continued financial support for the family during difficult times, helping them manage household expenses and living costs.
Old Age Medical Care
Retired employees or those opting for VRS/ERS can receive continued medical care benefits under ESI by paying a nominal annual fee of ₹120. This ensures affordable healthcare access even after retirement, promoting a healthy and financially secure post-employment life.

Frequently Asked Questions…
What are the benefits of ESI registration?
ESI registration offers employees access to medical care, sickness benefits, maternity aid, disability compensation, and dependent benefits. It also provides post-retirement medical care, ensuring social security and financial protection for workers and their families.
How is ESI registration different from PF registration?
ESI (Employees’ State Insurance) provides medical and social security benefits, while PF (Provident Fund) focuses on retirement savings. ESI covers healthcare and cash benefits during employment, whereas PF is a long-term savings plan for post-retirement or unemployment.
Can I apply for ESI registration online?
Yes. Employers can apply for ESI registration online through the ESIC portal by submitting the necessary documents and details. The process is completely digital and can be completed without visiting any physical office.
Is it mandatory to renew ESI registration?
No. Once an establishment is registered under ESIC, the registration is permanent. However, employers must ensure timely filing of returns and regular contribution payments to maintain compliance.
What is the due date for ESI contribution payment?
The ESI contribution must be deposited by the 15th of the following month. For example, contributions for April should be paid by 15th May. Timely payment helps avoid penalties and interest.
Are there any penalties for non-compliance with ESI registration?
Yes. Failure to register eligible employees or delay in contribution payments can result in penalties, interest charges, and legal action as per the ESI Act, 1948.
Can ESI registration be canceled or revoked?
Yes. ESI registration can be canceled if the establishment no longer meets the eligibility criteria. The employer must inform ESIC and complete the necessary formalities for cancellation.
Is it possible to voluntarily register for ESI even if the employee count is below the threshold?
Yes. Employers can opt for voluntary registration to provide ESI benefits even if their employee strength is below the legal requirement, ensuring better social security for their workforce.
